Karnataka Drought Losses May Reach Rs 60,000 Crore: Dy CM Parameshwara
Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara said losses across 217 drought-hit taluks could reach ₹60,000 crore as three Central teams inspect affected areas.
- In Bengaluru on Saturday, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Parameshwara announced drought-related losses could reach between ₹50,000 crore and ₹60,000 crore, prompting urgent requests for Central assistance.
- Ahead of Central team inspections, Parameshwara confirmed 217 taluks are declared drought-hit; loss assessments for 177 taluks reported approximately ₹46,000 crore, with 40 remaining taluks under evaluation.
- Joint Secretaries and officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment are arriving in Karnataka to assess rainfall and crop-loss conditions on the ground following a briefing.
- Parameshwara said recent rainfall, while providing some relief for drinking water, will not significantly benefit crops. "The drought situation will not be determined solely on the basis of recent rainfall," he said.
- Once Central teams complete their inspections and assessments of the remaining taluks conclude, a third and final memorandum covering all 217 drought-hit taluks will be submitted to the Centre.
