A 16-year-old girl collapsed last year after consuming kratom and ended up at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM), where she had to undergo a liver transplant. Part of the organ was donated to her by her mother. The head of the Transplant Surgery Clinic, Jiří Froněk, has now confirmed that the liver failure was related to kratom use, and warned of its dangers.
Doctors have long warned against the use of kratom. The SinMed.cz server drew attention to cases where several people faced unpleasant health problems after consuming bags of marijuana purchased at a Prague convenience store. Some felt like fainting, others had severe nausea. The case of a sixteen-year-old girl who ended up at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) last year after consuming kratom was much more serious.
