LNG Carrier to Be Jointly Built by Hanwha Geoje and Hanwha Philly

PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, JUL 22 – The $251 million LNG carrier order marks a key step in reviving U.S. shipbuilding with technology transfer from South Korea and plans to build up to 10 vessels annually by 2035.

  • On July 21, 2025, Hanwha Shipping ordered a liquefied natural gas carrier from Hanwha Philly Shipyard as the first U.S.-ordered, export-market-viable LNG carrier in almost 50 years.
  • Following Washington's push for homegrown shipbuilding, Hanwha Philly Shipyard was acquired for $100 million in December last year, aligning with U.S. policies promoting domestic LNG vessel construction.
  • With 174,000 cubic meters of capacity, the vessel incorporates GTT containment and a MEGI engine, while Hanwha Ocean builds in Geoje and Hanwha Philly manages U.S. Coast Guard compliance and final integration.
  • It will bolster cooperation between South Korea's and U.S. shipbuilding industries, helping Hanwha expand its presence in the North American LNG shipping market.
  • Looking ahead to 2028, delivery in the first half of 2028 paves the way for Hanwha to upskill the U.S. workforce and localize more LNG carrier components.
