Jenna Ortega Plays 'Artificial Friend' in 'Klara and the Sun'
Jenna Ortega stars as a solar-powered robot in the adaptation, which follows a mother who buys her for a sick daughter.
- The first trailer for director Taika Waititi's dystopian sci-fi film Klara and the Sun debuted, featuring stars Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. The movie adapts Kazuo Ishiguro's novel about a solar-powered robot designed to prevent human loneliness.
- In the story, a mother played by Adams buys the robot for her daughter Josie, who suffers from a mysterious illness. Klara, an Artificial Friend designed to assist humans, serves as the narrator in Ishiguro's dystopian source material.
- Actors Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, and Mia Tharia round out the cast for the production overseen by Sony's 3000 Pictures. Waititi produced the film alongside David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison, and Garrett Basch.
- Set for a theatrical release on Oct. 23, the film explores themes of companionship and connection. TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown said, "This is a hopeful story about friendship and connection at a time when technology makes us feel so alone."
- Waititi has been busy this year directing three Super Bowl ads and earning an estimated $10 million, the Herald reported. Ortega will return for the third season of her Netflix hit Wednesday, following recent work in other film projects.
