Kingston Police Searching for Missing Collins Bay Institution Inmate
Police say a warrant has been issued and public safety advice has been shared as officers search for the convicted murderer.
On Thursday, Mason Jenkins, 49, escaped from the minimum-security unit at Collins Bay Institution in Kingston after staff discovered him missing during an 11:15 a.m. count.
Jenkins was serving a life sentence for the 1998 first-degree murder of his sister, Jennifer Jenkins, and faces unrelated drug trafficking charges; he maintained his innocence for years before confessing in a 2009 documentary.
Police describe Jenkins as five-foot-nine and approximately 255 pounds with a fair complexion and shaved head; he was last seen wearing a light green jacket, blue jeans, and rubber boots, and authorities warn the public not to approach him.
Correctional Service Canada stated that minimum-security institutions are designed to foster prosocial behavior and personal development without fences, while the agency investigates how the escape occurred and works with police to locate Jenkins.
Given his connections to Chatham-Kent, the Chatham-Kent Police Service is assisting in the search; anyone with information on his whereabouts should immediately contact 911 or local authorities.
