King’s Plate Champion Luster Resumes Her 2026 Season with Race in Kentucky
The early 5-2 favorite is seeking a sixth start this year after four wins and a third-place finish in six career races, officials said.
On Saturday, Luster will race in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, marking the filly's first start since winning the $1-million Plate on Aug. 15 at Woodbine Racetrack.
Hall of Fame trainer Josie Carroll arrived in Kentucky on Wednesday with Luster, who has earned over $925,000 in six career starts, including a $750,000 Woodbine Oaks victory and her recent Plate championship.
John Velazquez, thoroughbred racing's top purse-earning jockey, returns to ride Luster on Saturday; she previously won a 1 1/16-mile turf event at Keeneland in April by five lengths, topping eight competitors.
Despite drawing an inner post, Carroll expressed confidence in Luster, saying, "But she's run on that course before so I think as long as she runs her race and gets into a good position we'll see what we are."
Carroll said Saturday's race will provide crucial evaluation: "I think this will definitely give us a line on how good she is," noting that Keeneland's long stretch aids positioning for fillies facing elite competition.
