King County Transportation District nears finalizing new sales tax
Board members are weighing a 12.5% city share of the expected $100 million in annual revenue and debating caps and banking rules.
The King County Transportation District is preparing to vote on a 0.1% sales tax to address a $200 million annual shortfall, generating $100 million annually to prevent fund elimination by 2028.
Without these funds, King County Roads cannot maintain more than 1,500 miles of roadway; South King County areas like Enumclaw and Black Diamond contain 18% of the county's total road miles.
Executive board members have reached consensus to set aside 12.5% of collected revenue, totaling $12.5 million, for cities, distributed proportionally based on population and tax contribution.
Board Member Steffanie Fain proposed a $10,000 minimum and $1.9 million maximum cap to ensure funds remain supplemental, while Rod Dembowski argued for higher caps and debated allowing cities to "bank" funds.
Following the May 27 executive group meeting, the full Transportation District will convene on June 12, marking the first time the district has unilaterally utilized its taxation powers since its 2014 formation.
