Kin of man who died at TVK meeting in Salem stage protest demanding solatium
TVK agreed to pay Rs 5 lakh and cover transportation costs after relatives protested the death of Suraj, the family’s sole breadwinner, at a party meeting in Salem.
- On Friday, S. Suraj, 37, died during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam meeting in Seelanaickenpatti, Salem after collapsing at a meeting addressed by TVK founder Vijay and was declared dead at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital.
- Relatives and CPI members refused to accept Suraj's body after postmortem, citing family needs and demanding solatium, as no TVK functionary had met them.
- A native of Maharashtra who lived in Kondalampatti, Salem, Suraj worked at a silver anklet unit, and protesters sought arrangements to transport his body to his native Maharashtra.
- Police said TVK agreed to provide about Rs 5 lakh in compensation and cover transport costs, while Salem Central district secretary Tamilan A Parthiban said the party would fund the children's education.
- Workers and Communist Party of India members joined relatives in sit-ins at Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital and the Collectorate, while police-mediated talks led TVK to pledge compensation and approach its high command, reported on February 14, 2026.
