Kimberley Remembers: 20 Years Since Sullivan Mine Tragedy
The ceremony honored four victims and highlighted new safety measures, including CO2 monitors now carried by all paramedics, officials said.
- On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Kimberley residents and first responders gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sullivan Mine tragedy, led by Primary Care Paramedic Grant Farquhar.
- Paramedics Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier, consultant Doug Erickson, and employee Bob Newcombe died on May 17, 2006, when a lack of oxygen in a water sampling shed caused the four fatalities.
- A new ambulance serving Kimberley features a memorial decal unveiled at the ceremony, while BCEHS Chief Ambulance Officer Leanne Heppell said the paramedics' actions "embodied the very best of the profession."
- Emergency services evolved significantly following the tragedy; paramedics now carry CO2 monitors and receive specialized confined space training, safeguards Heppell noted exist because of lessons learned during this event.
- George Weitzel, who lost his wife Kim, said "there was a wow factor that their deaths meant so much," while Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick emphasized keeping the memory alive for new residents.
