Kim Gamel, a former veteran AP correspondent in Europe and the Middle East, dies
The veteran AP correspondent covered the Iraq war and the Arab Spring, and her reporting on an Iraqi girl led to donations and medical care.
Veteran journalist Kim Gamel died Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at St. Luke's Medical Center in Boise, Idaho, after a yearslong battle with lymphoma. She was 57.
Gamel spent nearly three decades as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press and Stars and Stripes, covering major conflicts including the Arab Spring and the war in Iraq.
Her reporting on Shams Karim, an Iraqi girl disfigured in a 2006 bombing, catalyzed international donations for reconstructive surgery. "Whatever good things happen to Shams in the future are due to Kim Gamel," former editor Robert Reid said.
Colleagues praised Gamel as "fiercely independent" and committed to her work. Paul Haven, vice president of Global Newsgathering at Associated Press, said, "Kim's career took her all over the world, and made her witness to history."
In 2020, Gamel joined the Honolulu Civil Beat, contributing to coverage that earned a 2024 Pulitzer Prize finalist nomination for Maui wildfire reporting. She is survived by mother Bobbie Gamel and sister Seana Ruff.
