Kilauea's 52nd Episode Comes to an End
The U.S. Geological Survey raised Kīlauea’s alert level as fountains reached 300 feet and lava covered about 10% of the crater floor, officials said.
- Kīlauea's summit eruption entered Episode 52 on Tuesday evening, July 28, prompting the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to raise the Alert Level to WATCH and Aviation Color Code to ORANGE.
- Escalating precursory activity culminated in sustained lava fountaining from the north vent inside Halemaumau crater. Volcanic activity intensified rapidly as the summit continued to inflate throughout the afternoon.
- Lava fountains reached approximately 300 feet just 13 minutes after the eruption began, while lava flows covered about 10% of the crater floor. Tremor increased as the summit transitioned into rapid deflation.
- The 52nd episode ended early Wednesday morning at approximately 6:58 a.m. after starting Tuesday night. Hawaii County Civil Defense warned residents downwind of ash, advising exposure limits and water tank disconnection.
- According to HVO, ongoing hazards around Kīlauea's summit include unstable crater walls, ground cracking, and rockfalls. Most lava fountaining episodes since Dec. 23, 2024, have lasted one day or less.
