'Kiki's Delivery Service' to Be Adapted as Live-Action Series
The 10-episode series is the property’s first live-action TV adaptation and will draw mainly from the novel’s first volume.
- On Tuesday, BBC Studios, Wheel in Motion, and Kadokawa Corporation announced a partnership to produce the first live-action television series based on Eiko Kadono's book series.
- Marking the 40th anniversary of the book series, the project follows the 1989 animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.
- Screenwriter Irena Brignull, who wrote The Boxtrolls, Skellig, and The Little Prince, will adapt the series into 10 episodes of 30 minutes each.
- The narrative follows Kiki, a 13-year-old witch who relocates to the port town of Koriko with her cat, Jiji, to start her delivery service.
- Grainne McNamara of BBC Studios Kids & Family said the team is thrilled to bring the story to a "global stage," while Takeo Kodera, director of international co-productions at Kadokawa, called it an "exciting tribute.
