Kids spark safety concerns with 'Scuba Dance' social media trend
Dashcam footage shows children riding without helmets and one performing a TikTok trend, prompting safety concerns as police cite reckless e-bike use.
On Sunday night, dashcam footage captured children riding e-bikes and scooters without helmets at a Tropical Smoothie Cafe drive-thru in Cape Coral, with one youth performing the social media trend called "the Scuba Dance" near moving vehicles.
E-Bikes are regulated as traditional bicycles, requiring no license, training, or age limit, though Cape Coral police maintain authority to stop riders operating recklessly after several crashes occurred in the past year.
Cape Coral resident TJ Arrington warned that some social media trends are "a nuisance for people," urging children to "check in with your parents, make sure they know where you're at, and make sure you're following road safety."
Local resident Laura Swartz reported near-misses where youths dodged traffic and ran stop signs, stating "I've experienced a few times almost hitting them," highlighting frequent dangerous situations on city roads.
The "Scuba Dance," a popular TikTok trend involving hand gestures mimicking underwater movement, reflects how children follow social media trends without fully understanding consequences; Arrington urged limiting screen time to reduce such risky behavior.
