Former Benue SSG, David Salifu Killed in Suspected Kidnappers' Attack

Authorities say the former Benue State official died after suspected kidnappers shot him during an attempted abduction.

  • Former Secretary to the Benue State Government Prof. David Salifu died on Friday, July 3, after being shot by suspected kidnappers. A lecturer at the Federal University, Wukari, Salifu sustained fatal injuries on the Wukari-Zaki Biam road in Taraba State.
  • Chief Press Secretary to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, Tersoo Kula, confirmed Salifu was intercepted Thursday while traveling to Makurdi. Although he escaped the initial abduction attempt, the professor sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.
  • ADC candidate for Benue South Senatorial District, David Olofu, stated that after initial treatment in Wukari, arrangements were made to transfer Salifu to Abuja. He was instead taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi, where he died Friday night.
  • Secretary to the Benue State Government Deborah Serumun described Salifu as "an exceptional public servant, an accomplished scholar and an astute administrator." Former Benue Governor Gabriel Suswam called him a "hardworking gentleman and public servant."
  • Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack. Efforts to obtain comments from the Taraba State Police Command and the Police Public Relations Officer remained unsuccessful as of reporting time.
