Hillsborough Law to Return to Commons This Week After Fears About Summer Delay
The bill would impose a duty of candour on officials and expand legal aid for bereaved families, after months of delays over security service concerns.
The Public Office Bill, known as the Hillsborough Law, returns to the House of Commons this week for its final Report Stage and Third Reading after months of delays.
Stalled since January, the bill faced disputes over whether security services including MI5 could opt out of a duty of candour to protect national security during inquiries.
Breaking the impasse, the Government conceded there will be "no carve-outs, no exemptions for security services or anyone else," requiring intelligence employees to submit information to organization heads for disclosure to investigators.
Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, hailed the breakthrough as an "overwhelming victory," marking a major step toward ensuring families never again fight decades for the truth.
Once the bill clears its Commons stages, the legislative journey continues in the House of Lords, where campaigners will work with peers to ensure the law reaches the statute book.
