Nurses End 41-Day Strike After Deal with Governors
Union leaders said nurses will return to hospitals within 24 hours as the deal gives 45 days to negotiate a 2017 pay accord.
- On Wednesday, Sept 09, CoG chair Ahmed Abdullahi and KNUNM head Seth Panyako announced that Kenyan nurses called off their 41-day strike following a return-to-work agreement reached after day-long closed-door negotiations.
- The strike, which began on the 29th, disrupted public healthcare as nurses sought implementation of a collective bargaining agreement that the government cited as stalled by budgetary constraints.
- Seth Panyako directed nurses to resume duties within 24 hours, while the agreement provides 45 days for further negotiations on the collective bargaining agreement implementation.
- Under the deal, nurses will receive an additional Sh8,000 in risk allowance and Sh5,000 in uniform allowance, translating to a combined increase of Sh13,000.
- The agreement averts potential escalation after KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Bhimji Atellah issued a seven-day ultimatum threatening doctors would join the walkout if the dispute remained unresolved.
