- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Kenyan diplomat Martin Kimani as Assistant Secretary-General for Africa within the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations.
- Kimani brings 25 years of experience in international relations and peace security to the role, having previously served as Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations in New York from 2020 to 2024.
- Director of Kenya's National Counter Terrorism Centre from 2015 to 2020, Kimani also holds a PhD in War Studies from King's College, University of London.
- Succeeding Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Kimani will lead United Nations efforts to prevent conflicts and support peace processes across Africa and other regions experiencing instability.
- His extensive multilateral leadership includes serving as President of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme in 2023 and chairing the Security Council's Ad Hoc Working Group on Conflict Prevention.
