4 dead amid flooding caused by heavy rains, Kentucky governor says
Beshear said multiple water rescues were underway as up to 7 inches of rain fell and more storms were expected through late evening.
On Saturday, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency as excessive rainfall and flash flooding impacted the Commonwealth, with five counties issuing local emergency declarations.
Some parts of the Commonwealth have received 6 to 7 inches of rain, with a second round of storms expected between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. that could dump additional significant rainfall.
Gov. Beshear confirmed reports of fatalities as rescue teams conducted multiple water rescues from vehicles and homes, with at least one motorist swept away and killed by flash flooding.
Bullitt, Madison, Meade, Mercer, and Spencer counties declared local states of emergency, while First Baptist Church opened as an emergency shelter for flood victims in affected areas.
Officials urged residents to reserve 911 lines for life-threatening emergencies only and avoid driving after dark due to limited visibility, with non-emergency road updates available at 1-800-255-2587.
