Kent mayor has high hopes for Governor’s Space Council
The council will advise Ferguson on keeping Washington competitive as Kent Valley aerospace manufacturing employs more than 34,000 people and generates nearly $30 billion, officials said.
On Sept. 28, Governor Bob Ferguson announced a new 23-member Space Council to advise on keeping Washington competitive in the space economy. The group includes industry, labor, and education leaders.
Mayor Dana Ralph views her appointment as an "enormous" opportunity for Kent, which serves as a significant aerospace hub. The Kent Valley generates nearly $30 billion in economic output and employs more than 34,000 people.
Kent has long been central to aerospace, with Boeing engineers building Lunar Rover Vehicles over 50 years ago. Today the city hosts Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, and Stoke Space, led by CEO Andy Lapsa.
Workforce development and infrastructure remain key priorities for the Space Council, according to Ralph. She emphasized the city must collaborate with state partners to ensure companies can grow and attract next-generation investment.
Other states are competing aggressively for space investments and jobs, necessitating Washington's proactive approach to maintaining competitive advantage. The council aims to secure the industry's future across the state, building on its deep aerospace heritage.
