Kenny Atkinson to Remain Head Coach of Cleveland Cavaliers, Reports Say
Dan Gilbert and Koby Altman will review Kenny Atkinson’s future after Cleveland’s sweep, with the coach’s status still under consideration.
Head Coach Kenny Atkinson will return for his third season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday, after the organization determined no major coaching staff changes are needed following the Knicks' sweep.
The New York Knicks swept Cleveland Monday night with a 130-93 Game 4 victory, marking the fourth consecutive blowout in which the Cavaliers were outscored by 77 points across the Eastern Conference Finals series.
Atkinson's 116-48 regular-season record includes a franchise-best 64-18 mark in his first season that earned him the 2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year award; the team acquired James Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers in February to strengthen its playoff roster.
Guard Donovan Mitchell defended Atkinson after Monday's loss, calling the "hot seat" narrative "hilarious" and crediting the coach for reaching the conference finals, while both Mitchell and James Harden signaled intent to remain in Cleveland.
Owner Dan Gilbert acknowledged the franchise faces a critical summer, writing "We took a step ahead this spring, but we are nowhere near where we need to be" as Cleveland evaluates Harden's player option, Mitchell's contract, and potential roster additions.
