Kennedy Center asks judge to pause deadlines in ongoing lawsuit as it explores options for renovation
Management outlined three renovation paths, including full closure or limited programming, as a federal judge ordered the center to keep operating.
- On Wednesday, Judge Christopher Cooper ordered the Kennedy Center to report the purpose and status of the tarp and scaffolding covering the facade, which remains after workers removed President Donald Trump's name on June 13.
- Rep. Joyce Beatty sued to remove Trump's name, arguing Congress alone can rename the center under the 1964 statute creating it; workers removed the letters overnight but left the covering in place.
- Kennedy Center Executive Director Matt Floca said management will present "an array of options" for future operations at a mid-July board meeting, while the Washington National Opera sued the institution for $17 million on June 12.
- Judge Cooper rejected the administration's request for a delay, mandating a status report by July 31 or within seven days of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees meeting in mid-July, whichever comes first.
- The Kennedy Center will "maintain an operational model" past July 5, though management has deferred long-term programming decisions; currently only outdoor movie screenings and children's workshops appear on the calendar.
