Kemp suspends Dublin school board
The state board said the district’s decade-long deficits led to emergency payroll aid, 46 job cuts and a risk to its accreditation.
On Monday, August 17, 2026, Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order suspending all seven members of the Dublin City Board of Education following the Georgia State Board of Education's unanimous recommendation amid a $20 million financial crisis.
Dublin City Schools accrued a $20 million deficit and received an "Accredited Under Conditions" status from Cognia, placing it one level above losing accreditation; this crisis forced at least 46 job cuts and removal of top leadership.
Audits revealed the district spent more than $14 million in federal pandemic-relief funds on salaries rather than academic programs, while actual expenses exceeded budgets by approximately $15.6 million over fiscal years 2022 through 2024.
The seven suspended members—Amanda Smith, John Bell, Jeff Davis, Joanna Glover, Peggy Johnson, James Lanier, and Kenny Walters—remain suspended with pay; under state law, they may petition Governor Kemp for reinstatement between 30 and 60 days after suspension.
A five-member nominating committee appointed by Governor Kemp will recommend temporary replacements; the committee includes Matt Donaldson, Senator Larry Walker, Matt Hatchett, former Dublin Mayor Phil Best, and Edwin May, with no deadline set for selections.
