Georgia Gov. Kemp Signs Bill Passing Autism Alert System for First Responders | What to Know About Rio's Law
The measure adds autism training for law enforcement and a specialty license plate as advocates say it will help prevent dangerous misunderstandings.
- On Wednesday, Gov. Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 433, known as Rio's Law, at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Monroe County. The measure creates specialty license plates and mandates autism training for law enforcement.
- After her autistic son, Rio, experienced a sensory meltdown during a traffic stop, Layla Luna pursued the legislation to prevent similar misunderstandings between officers and individuals with autism.
- The law addresses the critical reality that roughly 35% of individuals on the spectrum are nonverbal, according to Luna. Training on recognizing autism symptoms aims to prevent dangerous police encounters.
- Connor Tomlinson, a Georgia resident with autism who advocated for the bill, said it provides a voice for those unable to advocate for themselves. Kemp also signed nine other public safety bills on Wednesday.
- With Rio's Law taking effect Jan 1, 2027, nine states are currently drafting similar legislation. Luna stated, "We've got 48 states to go," underscoring the national expansion effort ahead.
