Kela chief Lehtonen on extended medical leave until May 2026
The Director General of Finland’s Social Insurance Institution (Kela), Lasse Lehtonen, has taken extended medical leave until the end of May 2026 after being diagnosed with a serious illness while on a work trip to Brussels. Vertti Kiukas, outgoing chair of Kela’s board, confirmed on Tuesday that Lehtonen returned to Finland via an ambulance flight on Saturday. He remains under medical treatment in Finland.
Kela Director General Lasse Lehtonen is hospitalized and his sick leave will continue until the end of May.
Lehtonen has fallen seriously ill, says Kela.
In addition to Lehtonen's situation, Kela also announced the composition of Kela's new board.
Lehtonen has been brought home to Finland by ambulance.
