“It is incorrect to attribute the recent increase in sugar prices to the diversion of sugar for ethanol production,” the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said.
India is the second largest producer of sugar in the world, but the problem is that almost all of this sugar is consumed within India. A small amount is also being used to make ethanol.
