Starmer ‘felt sick’ watching police bodycam footage in Henry Nowak murder case
Bodycam footage shows Henry Nowak handcuffed while dying, prompting an Independent Office for Police Conduct probe into officers' actions and the impact of the killer's false racism accusations.
On Monday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he "felt sick" watching bodycam footage of 18-year-old Henry Nowak being handcuffed as he lay dying in Southampton, calling the incident "harrowing" and demanding answers.
Killer Vickrum Digwa murdered Nowak on December 3, 2025, after falsely telling police he was the victim of a racist attack; bodycam footage shows officers treating the dying student as the aggressor while he pleaded "I can't breathe."
Southampton Crown Court sentenced Digwa to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years for stabbing Nowak five times with a 21cm ceremonial knife on Belmont Road, also finding him guilty of carrying a bladed article in public.
Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds told the BBC on Tuesday the officers' conduct was "shocking," while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for a sentence review, alleging "anti-white prejudice" in policing decisions.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is expected to report within three months, examining body-worn video and trial material to assess how officers' decisions were influenced by Digwa's false racism accusations.
