'Keep up the spirit': Indonesian teenage 'Superman' joins wildfire fight

The 17-year-old volunteer has helped battle fires since 2023 as Indonesia says blazes burned more than 200,000 hectares this year.

  • Dressed as Superman, 17-year-old Rudiyansah has been helping douse wildfires in Central Kalimantan, Borneo, earning him the title of "forest hero" after video of him fighting fires near Palangkaraya went viral.
  • This year's fire season, exacerbated by Nino and severe drought, is the worst Mulyadi's volunteer group has seen since 2020, with current blazes already larger than those in 2019 and 2023.
  • Fires between January and July burned more than 200,000 hectares of land, an area three times the size of Jakarta, while resulting smog has reached Malaysia.
  • Drought has caused local wells to dry up, creating significant water shortages for firefighters, as Mulyadi noted his son remains a "normal kid" at home while actively helping douse fires.
  • Rudiyansah encouraged other volunteers to "keep up the spirit in the fight against the flames," as the government ordered more troop and aircraft deployments to contain the spreading blazes.
