Judge extends buffer zone outside Dedham courthouse for retrial of Karen Read
- Karen Read was arrested on February 1, 2022, and arraigned on February 2, 2022, facing charges of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle causing death in connection with the death of 46-year-old Boston police officer John O'Keefe.
- O'Keefe was found at 6 a.m. Outside the Albert residence with severe injuries, including bloody cuts on his right arm, swollen shut eyes, and blood and vomit on his clothes, after Read and O'Keefe were out drinking with friends on the night of January 28, 2022.
- Prosecutors allege that after a drunken argument, Read hit O'Keefe with her car and left him in frigid conditions, while Read maintains her innocence, claiming she is being scapegoated and that investigators are covering for the real killers, alleging O'Keefe was beaten inside the Albert family home.
- Read pleaded not guilty, posted $50,000 bail, and was released, while the defense argues that cell phone data and the nature of O'Keefe's injuries are inconsistent with being hit by a car, and that someone else was aware O'Keefe was dying before Read knew he was missing, pointing to a Google search of 'Hos long to die in cold'.
- Read's first trial in April 2024 ended in a hung jury and a mistrial declared on July 1, 2024, and with jury selection for the retrial scheduled to begin April 1 with a special prosecutor appointed, Judge Beverly Cannone extended the 200-foot buffer zone around the courthouse, while a five-part Investigation Discovery docuseries titled 'Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read' premiered on March 17, leaving Read's fate uncertain.
