Darryn Peterson: Creatine Led to Cramping at Kansas
Peterson said he missed 11 games after creatine triggered cramps and a severe preseason episode that sent him to the hospital.
Kansas star Darryn Peterson revealed that creatine use caused the severe cramping that disrupted his freshman season, dispelling rumors he was practicing 'load management' to prepare for the NBA Draft.
During a boot camp with head coach Bill Self in September, the supplement led to severe cramping where Peterson required emergency help and felt he was going to die on the training table.
Peterson had never taken the supplement before arriving at Kansas, where he started using it to build muscle; doctors determined his baseline creatine levels were already high, making his dosage unsafe.
Fear of another episode caused Peterson to request being subbed out whenever he felt cramping symptoms, though he appeared in 24 of the Jayhawks' 35 games last season.
Now that doctors have identified the source of his physical issues, Peterson is preparing for the NBA Draft as a top prospect, aiming to improve performance with professional coaches.
