Kamloops man to celebrate 29th birthday 10 years after near-fatal attack
Sue Simpson is asking for cards as her son prepares to turn 29, 10 years after a beating left him in long-term care.
Sue Simpson is requesting birthday cards for her son Jessie Simpson's 29th birthday on July 26, marking the fifth consecutive year of the annual campaign to celebrate the milestone.
Ten years ago, on June 19, 2016, Jessie was attacked by Kristopher Tiechrieb in Kamloops after a high school graduation party, an assault that left the then 18-year-old in a coma.
Despite frequent hospital visits for pneumonia and surgeries over the past decade, Jessie remains active and loves spending time with his mom; he always says, "cold hands, warm heart."
A civil suit against Teichrieb resulted in a $6.9-million judgment after he concealed assets, yet the family has not received any of the awarded funds despite the court ruling.
Sue plans to bring Jessie home to Savona for a barbecue with friends, viewing each birthday as precious; "this is a lifelong situation," she said, emphasizing the family's gratitude for community support.
