Thousands of silver coins have been discovered buried underground in Sysmä, located in the Päijät-Häme region of southern Finland. Dating back to the Viking Age, the discovery is being described as the largest Late Iron Age coin hoard ever unearthed in the country.

In Finland, the country's largest known treasure of silver coins of the Viking era was discovered. Thousands of coins with a total weight of about four and a half pounds were found by Calle Lappinen, an amateur of metal detectors near the centre of the Susma community, reporting to the Yle television and radio company, with reference to the Lahti museum complex.
"The thousands of silver coins hidden in two beret containers have been found in southern Finland. According to archaeologists, this is the largest known treasure of coins of the late iron age ever found in the country."
