Chargers' Justin Herbert Adjusting Footwork During Offseason Program
McDaniel is teaching Herbert a left-foot-first stance and limiting throws to speed up timing in the Chargers’ new passing scheme.
New Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is overhauling quarterback Justin Herbert's footwork, instructing the 28-year-old to lead with his non-dominant left foot instead of his traditional right.
McDaniel identified the technique's benefits while coaching in Houston in 2007, later implementing the stance change with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa before joining the Chargers.
To master the adjustment, Herbert has spent portions of organized team activities working with a large exercise ball instead of a football, focusing on process over immediate results.
Herbert embraced the change, noting that limiting his throwing volume during May and June keeps his arm fresh for the season's stretch run while mastering the new playbook.
Before pursuing a Super Bowl victory at SoFi Stadium, Herbert must master the system, which prioritizes getting the ball to playmakers like Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston in space.
