This is a historic decision of the Paris Administrative Court on Friday, March 27. More than 80 years after Thiaroye's bloodbath, the French courts condemned the state for concealing the circumstances of this massacre by the colonial army of African tirailers, who claimed their pay after fighting for France.
The Paris Administrative Court notes that the French authorities "issued several erroneous information" to the soldier's family in the years following his death and "did not use all the means (...) at their disposal to shed light on the precise circumstances of his death".
In 1944, the army opened fire in Thiaroye, Senegal, on tirailleurs who had fought for France and demanded their pay.
The administrative court in Paris had been seized by the son of one of the tirailers who, after having served France during the Second World War, was killed by the French army at the same time as others claiming payment of their pay.
