French culture minister Dati, ex-auto CEO Ghosn to stand trial for graft
FRANCE, JUL 24 – Rachida Dati and Carlos Ghosn face trial over allegations of influence peddling and disguised payments totaling €900,000 linked to lobbying for Renault-Nissan, prosecutors say.
- On Tuesday in Paris, France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati and Ghosn were ordered to face trial, with a judicial source telling AFP that Dati was to stand trial on corruption and abuse charges.
- Dati was charged in 2019 on suspicion of lobbying for Renault-Nissan while an MEP, and reportedly received €900,000 from a Dutch Renault subsidiary between 2010 and 2012.
- Prosecutors say Ghosn signed contracts disguising €900,000 as legal fees, and he escaped hidden in an audio-equipment box to Lebanon.
- Despite the charges, her allies affirmed she intends to continue her duties, an associate of President Emmanuel Macron said, while Dati's lawyers announced, `We will appeal this decision today`.
- A hearing on September 29 will set the trial dates, with the case likely after the Paris municipal elections in March next year.
