According to figures from the Ministry of Justice, there were 88,654 inmates in French prisons as of 1 May, an increase of 6 per cent over one year.

88,654 inmates were accounted for in France as of 1 May 2026. Prison density is particularly alarming in detention centres where the overall over-occupation rate reached 140%.
In one year, the prison population increased by 5,000 inmates for only about 750 additional places available.
