Election Integrity Advocates support DOJ's Lawsuit Against Illinois Unredacted Voter Registration Data
The DOJ, enforcing the National Voter Registration Act and Help America Vote Act, has sued Illinois as part of legal actions against 19 states for voter list compliance.
- On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a federal lawsuit in Springfield seeking access to Illinois' unredacted voter registration database and naming Executive Director Bernadette Matthews.
- After months of formal notices from the DOJ, the department escalated to litigation following Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon's months ago enforcement push citing the NVRA and HAVA.
- When asked for records, Illinois supplied names, addresses and ages but withheld dates of birth, ID numbers and Social Security numbers, and state officials say local authorities hold much of that information.
- Carol Davis, Illinois Conservative Union Chairman and election integrity advocate, praised the DOJ's enforcement of federal law, while Illinois election officials and Attorney General Kwame Raoul declined to comment, spokesman Matt Dietrich said.
- The ACLU warned the effort could create an unauthorized 'national voter database' as the DOJ files suits in Illinois, Georgia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia this month.
