- Mustapha previously served as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development until resigning earlier this year, departing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration following a political rift involving Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
- While quitting government, Mustapha stated the decision was taken "with a heavy heart," expressing gratitude to Yusuf; Saifullahi Hassan, spokesperson for the elder Kwankwaso, announced the nomination at Miller Road.
- Kwankwasiyya spokesperson Habibu Saleh Mohammed confirmed the development on Monday, as Hassan extended congratulations to Mustapha on his transition into the NDC Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate position.
