Short, Intense Exercise May Trigger Greater Health Benefits Than Longer Workouts
- A Rockefeller University study published Aug 21 found six 30-second sprints changed approximately one-quarter of blood proteins within minutes, significantly outperforming 90 minutes of moderate exercise in Cell Reports Medicine.
- Researchers found this rapid shift occurs through ectodomain shedding, where pre-existing cell-surface proteins are cleaved and released into circulation. Moderate exercise caused smaller, delayed molecular changes, with fatty acids rising only after three hours.
- Comparing data from more than 53,000 Biobank participants, researchers found sprinting altered 32 of 33 proteins linked to lower disease risk. Many of those sprint-responsive proteins were also connected to slower biological aging.
- The sprint workout also altered more than 200 metabolites. Study co-author Paul Cohen stated, "just a few minutes of intense exercise can trigger a significant molecular response," noting persistence after eight weeks of training.
- Luke Olsen, the postdoctoral fellow who conducted the studies, said exerkines are "highly sensitive to exercise intensity" and may mediate health-promoting effects, suggesting intensity dictates biological function rather than exercise duration alone.
