Jury in Jeffrey Donaldson Sex Offences Trial Sent Home for Day
The jury heard final legal directions after three hours and 10 minutes of deliberation and will continue considering 18 alleged offences on Friday.
The jury at Newry Crown Court will resume deliberations tomorrow in the sex offences trial of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, following yesterday's session where jurors deliberated for three hours and 10 minutes.
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, denies 18 alleged offences including rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency spanning 1985 to 2008; his wife, Eleanor Donaldson of Dublinhill Road, Dromore, Down, denies aiding and abetting charges.
Complainants allege they were abused as children, while Donaldson spent two days giving evidence; Judge Paul Ramsey told jurors he is "interested in a unanimous verdict" and must prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Eleanor Donaldson faces a separate trial of the facts on mental health grounds, a process that will test evidence against her but cannot result in a criminal conviction unlike proceedings for her husband.
Judge Paul Ramsey instructed jurors to consider each charge separately, emphasizing that if they are not satisfied with the evidence, they should find the defendants not guilty as the trial concludes.
