Injury-Hit New York Liberty Scramble, Sign 2 Hardship Players Hours Before Opener
The Liberty added Julia Vanloo and Aubrey Griffin after injuries and overseas absences left them with only seven available players.
- Hours before their season opener against the Connecticut Sun on Friday, the New York Liberty signed guard Julie Vanloo and forward Aubrey Griffin to hardship contracts because the team had only seven players available.
- Five players were unavailable for the Liberty's opener, including injured All-Star Satou Sabally, Sabrina Ionescu, and Rebecca Allen, while Raquel Carrera and Leonie Fiebich remain away fulfilling overseas commitments.
- Vanloo joins the team after being waived by the Sparks, while Griffin, an Ossining native, grew up about 45 minutes from Barclays Center and missed the 2025 season following knee surgery.
- Both players will be active for Friday's 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Barclays Center. Vanloo said she is "very excited to play in Barclays" after receiving the call Thursday night.
- Starting their 30th season, the Liberty utilized seven-day hardship contracts to exceed the 12-man roster limit, providing roster depth while injured stars Ionescu and Sabally recover.
