Judge rules against effort to create majority-Black DeSoto County districts
The judge said plaintiffs failed to prove the 2022 map intentionally diluted Black voting power and denied requests for a new plan and special elections.
U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson ruled that plaintiffs did not prove their claims that the 2022 DeSoto County district maps were drawn to dilute Black voting power.
The lawsuit filed in 2024 alleged that the DeSoto County electoral map diluted Black voting power in county elections.
The ACLU of Mississippi described the ruling as deeply disappointing.
The case was noted by the state Republican chairman as reflecting Democrats' frustration over election losses in DeSoto County.
