Judge dismisses Trump administration lawsuit alleging Harvard failed to protect Jewish students
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit by President Donald Trump's administration on Thursday that alleged Harvard University failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students from harassment.
The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in March alleging Harvard failed to address antisemitism on campus, seeking to freeze existing grants and recover previously paid federal funds.
District Judge Richard Stearns wrote that the complaint focused "almost entirely" on 2023-2024 incidents, finding three alleged later events "too isolated and episodic" to establish a pattern.
"There is no plausible allegation of noncompliance following statutory notice," Stearns wrote, ruling the government failed to prove ongoing violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at Harvard.
The original allegations stemmed from protests over Israel's war in Gaza during the 2023-2024 school year, yet the court concluded these occurrences did not demonstrate ongoing civil rights violations.
