Judge demands immigrants at Adelanto get clean water and medical care
- On Thursday, July 16, U.S. District Judge Sunshine Suzanne Sykes issued a preliminary injunction requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to immediately overhaul conditions for roughly 1,700 detainees at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center.
- Immigrant rights groups filed the lawsuit in January alleging inhumane conditions including mold, medical neglect, and dirty water, supported by more than two dozen sworn declarations from Adelanto detainees.
- The order mandates 24-hour access to clean drinking water, daily facility cleanings, nutritious meals, and four hours of daily outdoor recreation; it also permits physical contact during family visitation.
- Within 14 days, ICE must file a remedial plan for medical care and disability accommodations. Sykes also ordered two independent monitors to oversee compliance throughout the litigation.
- Assistant U.S. Attorney Pushkal Mishra had argued the federal government was not liable for contractor GEO Group Inc., a stance contradicting the government's 2022 legal position on private prison accountability.
