Who Is the New Judge Assigned to Alex Murdaugh's Double Murder Case?
The appointment gives McCaslin exclusive control over retrial proceedings after the high court ruled juror interference tainted the original case.
On Monday, June 8, South Carolina Chief Justice John Kittredge appointed Circuit Court Judge Debra R. McCaslin to preside over the retrial of Alex Murdaugh, granting her exclusive jurisdiction over all general sessions matters and motions tied to the case.
Following the South Carolina Supreme Court's decision on May 13 to overturn Murdaugh's 2023 murder convictions, the case returns to circuit court due to improper jury influence by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill.
Elected to the bench in 2020, McCaslin previously practiced law in Columbia and once sublet office space from defense attorney Dick Harpootlian, whom she described as a mentor who "made an impression" on her.
Attorney General Alan Wilson's office announced it will "aggressively" retry the case, while Murdaugh's defense team is seeking a change of venue; court officials confirmed McCaslin will not comment on pending proceedings.
As Murdaugh remains imprisoned for financial crimes, McCaslin will manage the retrial utilizing her experience presiding over complex criminal matters, including cases involving multiple murders and disputed DNA evidence.
