Deported Texas DACA Recipient Returned to U.S. Freed After Detainment
Federal officials freed José Contreras Díaz after he was deported to Honduras and rearrested in Texas, where 261 DACA recipients were arrested from January to November 2025.
- On Thursday, federal officials freed 30-year-old José Contreras Díaz, a South Texas resident, after he was deported to Honduras earlier this year and re-arrested upon returning to the United States.
- Contreras, an Edinburg resident, was previously deported after his mother missed a court appointment years ago, though lawyer Stacy Tolchin argued his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status remained valid at arrest.
- Tolchin cited a federal judge's ruling in the case of 42-year-old Maria de Jesús Estrada Juárez, which labeled the deportation of DACA recipients a "flagrant violation" of protections.

- Since President Trump returned to office, at least 261 DACA recipients have been arrested, with between 86 and 174 deported according to figures requested by Congress.
