Longtime Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl dies following dementia diagnosis
The longtime Republican senator served nearly three decades in Congress and remained active as a constitutional expert before his family announced his death.
- Former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl died Thursday at age 84 from complications of a neurological disease, his family announced in a written statement on September 17, 2026.
- Kyl represented Arizona in the U.S. House from 1987 to 1995 and the Senate from 1995 to 2013, then returned in 2018 after then-Governor Doug Ducey appointed him to fill the seat vacated by John McCain's death.
- Recognized as a "conservative workhorse," Kyl rose to Senate minority whip and championed water rights settlements. Time magazine named him one of the "25 Hardest Working Lawmakers" in 2010 and included him on its Time 100 list.
- Arizona Senate Republicans called Kyl "one of its finest statesmen" who combined conservative conviction with policy expertise. Former Governor Doug Ducey said, "Jon Kyl gave Arizona nearly three decades of principled, thoughtful leadership."
- The former senator withdrew from public life last December after announcing a dementia diagnosis. His family said memorial services for the longtime Arizonan will be announced at a later date.
