‘My soul is happy again’: ‘Hudson & Rex’ fans claim victory as John Reardon returns
Fans pushed for his return after he was replaced in Season 8, and Citytv says the new season will run 12 episodes.
On Thursday, Citytv announced that actor John Reardon is returning to Hudson & Rex for its ninth season, reuniting with his canine partner, Rex, after a one-season absence.
Reardon stepped away after a tonsil cancer diagnosis in 2024; he revealed in September 2025 that producers chose to go in a "different direction," replacing him with British actor Luke Roberts.
Demanding Reardon's return, fans flooded social media with criticism and launched petitions; Shaftesbury, the show's production company, stated they are "incredibly pleased" to have the actor back as Detective Charlie Hudson.
Production for the 12-episode season begins in June in St. John's, Newfoundland, where Charlie returns with one final task to accomplish before putting his "Belize nightmare" behind him.
Sold to over 100 territories including the United States, Germany, and France, the series remains a global success, with cast members Mayko Nguyen and Kevin Hanchard also slated to return.
