Hundreds of jobs at risk as John Lewis plans to cut some services
The retailer says the changes could put up to 200 jobs at risk as it consults staff and shifts more currency sales online.
John Lewis has proposed closing 30 travel money desks and gift wrapping services across stores, according to Retail Week, potentially affecting up to 200 jobs.
The proposal follows a pre-tax loss of £21 million in the year to January 31, 2026, despite £13.4 billion in sales, as customers increasingly purchase currencies online rather than in-store.
Of the 200 staff affected, 125 are full-time employees; these services operate at 30 stores with gift wrapping desks located in 25.
Closures are not yet confirmed; John Lewis is "consulting" with staff before finalizing decisions while aiming to offer gift wrapping in a "more accessible way."
Barely three weeks ago, John Lewis announced a £50m investment across five stores to transform its 36-store estate, with Managing Director Peter Ruis stating the company aims to create places where "customers love to spend their time.
