Rugby League Legend John Kear Dies Aged 71 After Challenge Cup Final
The former rugby league coach and BBC broadcaster led Sheffield Eagles and Hull FC to Challenge Cup titles and oversaw more than 700 games.
On Sunday, rugby league broadcaster and former Challenge Cup-winning coach John Kear died suddenly at age 71 while returning from Wembley after covering the Challenge Cup final for the BBC.
The Yorkshireman oversaw more than 700 matches during an iconic career, masterminding Challenge Cup victories with Sheffield Eagles in 1998 and Hull FC in 2005.
Before coaching, Kear enjoyed a 10-year playing career as an outside back at Castleford, making 133 appearances before later coaching England and Wales during the 2000, 2017, and 2021 World Cup tournaments.
RFL Chair Nigel Wood OBE said, "On behalf of the whole sport, our thoughts and condolences are with John's wife Dawn," while broadcaster Dave Woods called Kear "the most passionate and eloquent of evangelists."
Recently retired after a final stint at Batley Bulldogs, Kear remained accessible to colleagues; Hull FC Chief Operating Officer Tony Sutton recalled he "always had time to stop for a chat.
