Ex-Lakers Execs Joey and Jerry Buss, Join San Diego Padres Ownership Group
Buss Sports Capital bought about a 5% stake as MLB approved the Padres sale at a record $3.9 billion valuation.
On Wednesday, brothers Joey and Jesse Buss joined the San Diego Padres ownership group through their investment firm, Buss Sports Capital, following the recent $3.9 billion sale to Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano.
Last week, Jones and Feliciano finalized their purchase of the Padres at a record $3.9 billion valuation, which MLB recently approved, establishing the ownership structure the Buss brothers have now joined.
ESPN reported that Buss Sports Capital purchased a stake "in the neighborhood of 5%" in the franchise. Joey Buss said in a statement they are "honored to join" the team and contribute to its future.
Drawing on nearly two decades in basketball operations, Jesse Buss said the brothers aim to apply their professional experience to building a championship organization in San Diego through the ownership group.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is contesting her siblings' plan to sell the family's 17.8% stake in the Lakers to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, complicating the broader family business transition.
